An artist’s dining table, with its high-spirited chatter as they savor fine cuisine, often provides a glimpse into their lives.

A recipe, like a palette of colors, can reveal hints of an artist’s lifestyle.

01

Claude Monet (November 14, 1840 – December 5, 1926)

Claude Monet, a French master painter, is revered as the “Father of Impressionism” and is recognized as one of the leading figures and pioneers of the Impressionist movement. His unique painting technique involved manipulating shadows and contours through the interplay of color and light.

Monet’s world-renowned garden in Giverny, a small town located 70 kilometers west of Paris, was a sanctuary where he relished leisurely breakfasts in the sunlight, enjoying simple fruit sauces and toast. He often invited his friends from the art world, such as poet Stéphane Mallarmé, writers Paul Valéry, and fellow painter Paul Cézanne, to join him for luncheons amidst the garden’s beauty.

In 1989, the book “Monet’s Table: The Cooking Journal of Claude Monet” was released, featuring a collection of 180 classic French recipes inspired by Monet’s personal diary entries.

Monet’s Table:The Cooking Journal of Claude Monet

02

Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987)

Andy Warhol, an American artist, printmaker, and filmmaker, was a pioneering figure in the visual art movement known as Pop Art and a prominent representative of American Pop Art.

Warhol was one of the first to candidly address the relationship between art and commerce, famously stating that “commercial art is the next step in art.”

His famous piece “Campbell’s Soup Cans” sparked debates around the definition of art and the value of everyday objects.

Warhol collaborated with interior designer Suzie Frankfurt to create “Wild Raspberries” (1959), a satirical cookbook parodying the mass-produced French cuisine cookbooks that were especially popular during the 1950s.

In this cookbook, Suzie Frankfurt was responsible for writing the recipes, while Andy Warhol contributed illustrations throughout the book. Interestingly, the handwritten text in the book was penned by Warhol’s mother.

The book features unconventional instructions such as purchasing pre-made sponge cakes and decorating them yourself, and garnishing lobster tails with fruit jellies and parsley.

03

Leonardo da Vinci (April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519)

Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most celebrated artists in history, alongside Michelangelo and Raphael, together known as the three giants of the Renaissance. He is renowned for his realistic and highly influential paintings.

Da Vinci’s cookbook, “De Honesta Voluptate,” was discovered after his death and showcases his love for food, culinary skills, philosophy on dining, and advice on wine pairings, alongside kitchen designs and inventions.

The cookbook reveals the evolution of Italian cuisine from the 15th to 16th centuries, ranging from opulent court banquets and exquisite dishes with expensive ingredients to simple peasant fare.
