The first time you see Liv Lee’s work, you’ll immediately be struck by her “shaky” and “wobbly” lines: curved bananas, misshapen lemons, twisting plants, flowers lined up yet unable to stand steadily. Though skewed and uneven, they somehow make you feel—the world is just meant to be this adorable.

01. The “Wild” Artist Under the Sun

Like many artists, Liv Lee’s path was not smooth. She is not a full-time illustrator. After university, she held a stable but uninspiring job, exploring different art forms on weekends for years—from woodblock prints to collage, from fine-line plants to mixed media. It was only after the birth of her daughter in 2019 that she truly found her unique style amidst the busy life of parenting.

The abundant sunlight, lush rainforests, and rich flora and fauna of Australia are her greatest muses. Almost all her works draw inspiration from nature: native flowers, fruits, vegetables, and the small birds peeking in her garden.

02. Unlocking Liv Lee’s Artistic Magic

Liv Lee once said she loves observing plants in their natural, unrestrained growth. This approach frees her drawings from botanical rigor, giving them childlike innocence and simplicity.

In traditional sketch classes, teachers often demand symmetry and accurate perspective. In Liv Lee’s works, these rules simply “don’t apply.”

Her signature style is the “twisting” depiction of plants. In her hands, nothing is perfectly symmetrical or flawless: curved bananas, deformed lemons, wobbly tomatoes, and twisted plants are common motifs. This “shaky” sense of relaxation gives her works vitality and a playful, whimsical charm.

Color is the most recognizable feature of her work. She favors high-brightness tones and bold color contrasts to create lively, uplifting atmospheres. She adjusts color schemes according to the theme—light backgrounds with bright subjects, colored backgrounds with soft subjects—so every piece is visually striking without feeling chaotic.

This bright color palette aligns with children’s aesthetics and conveys an optimistic, positive attitude, making her work ideal for artistic education.

In technique, Liv Lee primarily uses gouache. Her brushstrokes are relaxed and fluid, not obsessively detailed, yet capture the essence of the subject. She never deliberately blocks space but fills the canvas using positive and negative shapes, arranging flowers and fruits with “orderly disorder,” creating a unique aesthetic.

Each piece begins with a rough sketch to determine outline, color, and layout, followed by detailing and color optimization after scanning. Her process blends spontaneous inspiration with careful attention to detail.

03. The “Dopamine Machine” Favored by Brands

As an illustrator with both artistry and approachability, Liv Lee’s works are not only enjoyable to view but also educational. Her creations remind us that art is never about perfection; you don’t need technical mastery or standardized forms—just feel life and boldly express love, and you can create warm, powerful works.

Her notable works like Bendy ‘nanas and Strawberries evoke childhood nostalgia, a love of life, and reverence for nature, teaching children to discover, feel, and express beauty.

Today, Liv Lee’s art extends beyond the frame. Her designs appear on tea towels, blankets, bags, and clothing. “When artwork is applied this way, art becomes accessible to many, bringing joy into daily life.”

Her collaborations include prestigious brands such as Burberry, L’Occitane, Gorman, Hessnatur, and Chronicle Books.

Liv Lee’s story teaches us: finding your own style doesn’t require anxiety or forcing it. It can quietly emerge—after becoming a mother, during time stuck at home, or on a backyard walk.

Like her bananas, it’s okay to bend; like her lemons, it’s okay to be misshapen. In a rule-bound world, having the courage to be imperfect is itself healing.

And in those wobbly lines lies exactly what we need most: a touch of childlike innocence, a sense of ease, and an enduring love for ordinary things.

Liv Lee

Liv Lee
