Piet Cornelies Mondrian (Piet Cornelies Mondrian, March 7, 1872 – February 1, 1944) was a Dutch painter, a behind-the-scenes artist of the De Stijl movement, and one of the pioneers of non-figurative painting. His influence on later architecture and design is significant.
Mondrian was a pioneer of geometric abstractionism, using geometric shapes as fundamental elements of his paintings. Alongside Theo van Doesburg, he co-founded the De Stijl movement, advocating his artistic concept of “neo-plasticism.” He believed that art should completely break away from natural external forms to represent abstract spirit, pursuing an absolute realm of unity between humans and the divine, known as “pure abstraction.”

Mondrian’s Aesthetic Essence: Exploring Modernism and Minimalism Through Color, Line, and Form
Mondrian adhered to a strict and controlled approach to creation, using the purest and most fundamental artistic elements. In doing so, he dismantled the conventional rules of masterpiece composition. Mondrian’s abstract style and structured aesthetic, which greatly influenced the 20th-century aesthetic, left an impact on every corner of the art world and creative industries and even revolutionized the public’s understanding of visual culture.
“I believe it is art to employ straight lines and color blocks to intuitively guide compositions, bringing forth the most essential beauty, like rhythm and rhyme.”
After Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh, Mondrian became the most influential Dutch artist. Known as the “grid master,” he was a pioneer of geometric abstractionism, using geometric shapes as fundamental elements in his paintings.

Light and shadow are the most distinctive characteristics of Impressionism. Mondrian’s 1905 piece “Willow Grove – Impression of Light and Shadow” bears a resemblance to Beijing’s Bird’s Nest, leaving a good impression. It is clear that Mondrian’s work was influenced by Impressionism at the time.
Mondrian’s painting style was unconventional, indicating he did not care much for the established rules of contemporary art. Unlike previous great painters, Mondrian preferred painting horizontally: he laid the canvas flat on a table in the center of his studio, providing him with a new perspective for observation and contemplation. This technique later influenced 20th-century art, particularly when Mondrian began inviting post-expressionist artists to join him in his second studio in New York. Consequently, outstanding American painters such as Pollock and Rusco began emulating Mondrian’s creative methods, advancing the vision and creativity of painting.
“Broadway Boogie-Woogie,” painted in 1943, is considered Mondrian’s magnum opus. Its rhythmic color blocks, blurred interfaces, and expansive momentum, reminiscent of perfect passages lifted from ambient music scores, make it a quintessential Mondrian work.
In “Composition C (No.3) with Red, Yellow, and Blue,” Mondrian uses a pure white background. He believed that, as a basis for constructing a work, it is universally applicable and pristine. Then, he painted sparse grids composed of black horizontal or vertical lines of varying thicknesses. This is a crucial detail. Mondrian aimed to convey the concept of perpetual motion in life through his art, believing that this goal could be achieved by subtly altering the width of the black lines. He theorized that the thinner the line, the faster the eye can “read” its trajectory, and vice versa. Therefore, by changing the width, he could employ lines as if using a car accelerator pedal, which would help successfully achieve his ultimate goal: giving his paintings “dynamic balance.”
Mondrian’s original work embodies a philosophy of “less is more.” He aspired to create an art that is strong, extremely simple, meticulously rigorous, purely clean, and of high virtue. He sought to triumph over “individual supremacy” with a harmonious and unified concept that everyone could understand.
