Japanese illustrator Mogu Takahashi was born in Tokyo in 1984 and is a self-taught artist. Influenced by her uncle, who was an architect, Mogu initially chose to apply to an architecture school when entering university. However, she later realized that her true interest did not lie in architecture at all.

In order to pursue painting, Takahashi became somewhat of a rebellious teenager—she skipped classes and even sold her hand-drawn postcards in parks. In 2005, she was unexpectedly invited to participate in a group exhibition in New York. That experience marked the beginning of her artistic journey—she was just 20 years old at the time.

Since she never received formal academic training in art, Takahashi’s creative style is noticeably different from the typical institutional approach. In the beginning, she primarily used pens to create her drawings. Around 2002, she joined MAYAMAXX, a Japanese painting studio, and began experimenting with gouache. She said, “Gouache is now my best partner because it delivers beautiful colors and dries quickly.”

Mogu Takahashi is known for her playful and adorable style, which carries a sense of freedom and joy. Her subjects are often drawn from everyday life—such as pets and family members—but the purity and humor in her work resonate universally, making them accessible and appreciated by people all over the world.

“My inspiration comes from everything around me,” Takahashi once said about her creative process. “I love daydreaming in my head. On the way to my studio, I always think: what would it look like if I put a hat on a rabbit? If a turtle could talk, what would he want to tell me? It’s a bit strange, but that’s part of my style.”

The layout and composition of Takahashi’s work are often clever—perhaps influenced by her background in architecture—which gives her more freedom in her creative expression. She also enjoys hiding messages in her artwork that only close friends would understand. For her, painting is like writing a letter to someone: a way to express emotions and ideas.

After seeing some of Takahashi’s doodle sketchbook illustrations, someone once commented, “Ha! A three-year-old could draw that!” To which she responded, “I take that as the highest compliment.” Her spontaneous strokes and naïve forms may appear unskilled, but they reflect the whimsical universe within her imagination.

In 2012, at the age of 28, Takahashi launched a project called Mogu Daily Doodles—a daily creative exercise where she would sketch out her ideas and inspirations, then share photos of them on her Instagram.

While Mogu Takahashi explores various visual mediums—including sketching, oil painting, and sculpture—she still maintains the habit of drawing freely in her sketchbook.

Notably, she has maintained a close, nearly decade-long collaboration with the Swedish lifestyle brand Fine Little Day.
