Joan Cornellà, a renowned contemporary artist celebrated for his surrealist creations and dark humor, uses simple visual language and a playful, child-like drawing style to portray society’s darker aspects and the cruelty of human nature. With over 8 million followers on social media, Cornellà enjoys international acclaim and has exhibited his work in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, London, Paris, and New York. The COVID-19 pandemic has done little to slow his rise, with Sotheby’s and AllRightsReserved hosting his largest solo exhibition in Hong Kong in December 2020. Major art institutions such as the MIMA Museum in Belgium and Espacio SOLO in Spain have acquired his works, which consistently perform well at auction.

“The Absurdity of Human Life” is Joan Cornellà’s first major museum exhibition in China, showcasing acrylic canvas paintings and sculptural installations created amidst the global pandemic. Unlike previous works, these acrylic canvases diverge from the artist’s characteristic simple style with bold, monochromatic backgrounds; instead, they depict intricate details within vividly colored artworks, marking a significant milestone in Cornellà’s career.

#VOTE: David Shrigley vs Joan Cornellà Exhibition in Singapore

For the first time ever, Singapore witnessed a monumental clash between art world giants David Shrigley and Joan Cornellà at an exhibition that ended in June. In just over a year, the darkly humorous clash between British artist David Shrigley and Spanish satirist Joan Cornellà has become the latest breakthrough racket entitled VOTE. This bilateral immersion in artistic input has resulted in a suite of eight silkscreen prints embodying the ironic and cynical dark sense of humor shared by both artists. In addition, never-before-seen digital artworks resulting from their collaboration will be a revelation unique to Void Deck.

The work of these artists has become a bland and uninspired relief from the performance comics that most of us have come to familiarize ourselves with in their webcomics and one liners. In this exhibition, the incisive nature of the duo’s work, set against the backdrop of local fast-paced and repetitive lifestyles, becomes even more apparent and ultimately produces subtle visual cues that challenge the sanctity of social norms. Voting is the ultimate impetus for new-age opinion leaders, celebrity artists, and the public to be integrated into the conversation, with themes that convey a broader point of view while advancing the narrative that liberal philosophy can coexist within culturalism; its presence on the wall will serve as a stark reminder of what is possible on a daily basis.

At Void Deck, artistic performances should take second place to the fun and entertainment that presenters can provide. Visitors can expect a range of activities that complement the theme of the exhibition. In honor of its first foray into the local art market, Void Deck will also feature exclusive sculptures available only through the brand’s physical and online platforms.
