Rabbit 《
Jeff Koons’ 1986 stainless steel sculpture titled “Rabbit” is a contemporary art masterpiece. Standing at over 3 feet tall, the minimalist piece combines cuteness and grandeur while incorporating the visual language of childhood. Its faceless rabbit appears enigmatic yet charmingly chubby.
Jeff and 《Rabbit》
Born in York, Pennsylvania in 1955, Koons studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, later living and working in New York City.
Jeff Koons 1955
One of the most renowned and controversial contemporary artists since the 1970s, Koons expertly navigates the business side of art. In 2019, his glass-and-steel rabbit dethroned David Hockney’s auction record, becoming the most expensive artwork sold by a living artist.

Koons’ works reflect historical idealism and contemporary mass consumerism, superficiality, and mediocrity, creating objects that accurately reflect, consume, and distort their environments and viewers.
Another notable series, “Balloon Dog” (1994-2000), comprises mirrored stainless steel sculptures inspired by balloon toys. Available in various colors and sizes, the most famous is the 10-foot-tall, one-ton orange Balloon Dog.
The expensive, shiny metal surface matches cheap rubber’s reflective appeal, showcasing the seductive power of precious metal. Its perfect reflections and virtually invisible seams leave viewers marveling at the object’s symmetry and perfection.

《Play-Doh Sculpture》
Jeff Koons’ “Play-Doh” sculpture, with an estimated value of $20 million, may look like children’s play clay but is actually a massive steel structure. Koons revealed he initially planned to create the piece using polyethylene but ultimately chose aluminum to maintain a sense of surrealism. Micro glass beads were added to supplement the aluminum, reflecting light on 27 separate, stacked organic forms.
“The goal at the end of the day was to have the artwork be as believable as Play-Doh,” Koons said.
“Hanging Heart” is one of five large-scale stainless steel heart-shaped sculptures by Jeff Koons, and the only one held by the artist himself until its 2013 sale to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Part of Koons’ “Celebration” series, which also includes balloon dogs and cracked eggs, each segment has only five versions.
In an interview, Koons expressed his honor at having “Hanging Heart” housed at Crystal Bridges. “The artwork, as a symbol of warmth, humanity, spirituality, and romance, can be experienced by many more people, communicating a spiritual connection beyond just its romantic appeal,” he said.
Jeff Koons
Despite criticism for his works’ vulgarity and banality, Koons remains among the wealthiest contemporary artists. His works are collected by numerous museums and institutions worldwide, solidifying his unshakable position in contemporary art history.
