Every individual is a unique entity with distinct thoughts and ideas, shaped by their experiences and emotions. This diversity in perception leads to innovation.
Thus, the conclusion of this article: can art ever be completely created? The answer is no.
Innovation in art can be categorized into three aspects: content, subject, and medium. Innovation is controversial, as it’s not about who did something first, but who manages to imbue the work with artistic meaning. Therefore, creativity is endless, branching out like an ever-expanding mind map.
In his book “Designing Design,” Japanese designer Kenya Hara states, “Creating something from scratch is a form of creation, but transforming the known into the unknown is also an act of creation… The more we are convinced that we understand something well, the less accurate our understanding becomes… Previously, we were only designing ‘stimuli,’ but now we must break away from that past and view the ordinary with fresh eyes to develop new design ideas.”
Japanese designer Kenya Hara, in his book “Designing Design”, proposes the intriguing concept of “RE-DESIGN”:
“RE-DESIGN” essentially means “re-design,” re-examining familiar objects in our daily lives to find the essence of modern design, and breathing new life into everyday objects. It also includes the process of re-examining common and familiar things in society.
The artwork of Lucio Fontana, an Argentinian/Italian minimalist artist, embodies this innovative mindset. His slashed canvases are world-renowned, and his work has influenced many artists.
By slashing the canvas, Fontana not only challenges conventional thinking but also encourages viewers to break free from preconceived notions about art. Although seemingly destructive, the artist perceives the action as opening a portal between the space within the painting and the outside world. By employing holes and slashes, Fontana transcends the limitations of two-dimensional space and the illusions of painting, redefining the boundaries between painting and sculpture.
Through his innovative approach, Lucio Fontana created a division between the space within and outside the painting with a single slash, thus breaking the boundaries of painting and sculpture. The concept of “Re-Design” encourages us to perceive everyday objects in a new light and serves as a reminder that innovation and creativity in art are boundless.
