100 Enlightening Artists Issue 05 | Fanny Brodar: A Weaver of Childhood Magic
Fanny Brodar
Fanny Brodar was born in Oslo, Norway, in 1971 and grew up in New York. Currently, she resides and works in Maine. With a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Boston Art Institute, her work is influenced by Philip Guston’s Neo-Expressionist figuration and Rose Wiley’s cartoonish depictions of modern life.
Despite being well-suited for her profession, Fanny faced numerous challenges and had to explore various other careers, putting her dream of becoming a children’s book illustrator on hold. It wasn’t until a friend gave her a vintage easel belonging to her late mother that she was encouraged to pick up the paintbrush once again. Soon, she became enamored with painting and never looked back.
Her art primarily stems from childhood curiosity, with the “Martians” in her paintings acting as her imaginary childhood playmates, helping her through difficult times in her youth.
Fanny’s distinctive use of vibrant colors, child-like scribbles, and playful text invites viewers to delve into their own sense of nostalgia, while questioning the boundaries of reality and fiction, thus awakening a sense of purity and joy within.
Fanny Brodar
In her own words: “I often incorporate flowers and little monsters in my work, weaving these elements together like tapestries—creating a fantastical, extraordinary world I dream of stepping into.”
Brodar’s artistic style is characterized by vivid colors and complex characters, combining Abstract Expressionism with Neo-Pop. She utilizes a variety of media, primarily acrylic paint and oil pastels. Her work conveys a longing for companionship and vitality. Not only does her art serve as a means of self-healing, but it also aims to heal the inner child in her audience.

Compared to the realistic elements of the world, Brodar prefers abstract, simple, and lively subjects. She refers to her art as a “magic carpet,” with the other side representing endless imagination. She prefers to spend her time in her studio, which she likens to an 8-year-old child’s creative space, allowing her the freedom and spontaneity essential to her creative process.
Brodar never pre-plans the shapes of her characters; instead, they emerge through improvisation. “My inspiration mainly comes from childhood memories, my imagination, and things that are important to me,” she says. “I love improv, and my painting style is quite similar—spontaneous rather than pre-drawn. This allows viewers to see my process through exposed pencil marks, paint drips, and intentionally unpainted areas.”
In observing Brodar’s works, one can sense the profound curiosity often present in children but gradually lost by many in adulthood. This curiosity is both beautiful and powerful—an enchanting quality that she manages to capture and convey so effectively.
