CULTUREDISCOVER ART COMPETITION
Singapore is a multicultural country, and the Chinese community is one of its major ethnic groups, accounting for about 76% of the total population.
Language
The main language of the Chinese community is Mandarin, but some also speak dialects such as Hokkien, Hakka, and Cantonese. In addition, English is widely used in Singapore and is one of the country’s official languages.
Religion
The religions practiced by the Chinese include Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. Many Chinese in Singapore also follow Christianity and Islam.
Festivals
Traditional Chinese festivals are celebrated in Singapore, including the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the Dragon Boat Festival. These occasions are typically times for family reunions and celebrations, featuring traditional activities such as moon gazing, making rice dumplings, and performing dragon and lion dances.
Cuisine
Chinese cuisine in Singapore is influenced by various regional styles from China, such as Fujian, Cantonese, Hakka, and Teochew dishes. Many famous Chinese foods in Singapore include fried noodles, Hainanese chicken rice, durian cake, and bak kut teh (pork rib soup).
Traditional Arts
Traditional Chinese arts have been preserved and developed in Singapore. Art forms such as Peking opera, Nanyin (Southern tunes), erhu performances, and Chinese dance are performed and passed down within the Chinese community. In addition, Chinese calligraphy, painting, and paper-cutting are also highly valued.
Cultural Institutions
Singapore has several institutions dedicated to promoting and preserving Chinese culture, such as the National Museum of Singapore and the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre. These organizations host exhibitions, performances, and educational programs to deepen public understanding of Chinese culture.
Education
The Singapore education system also emphasizes the inheritance of traditional culture. Schools teach Chinese culture and values, and organize cultural activities to help students develop a sense of identity and connection with their cultural roots.
The Chinese culture in Singapore stands out in a multicultural context — it is deeply influenced by traditional Chinese culture while blending harmoniously with those of other ethnic groups, forming a unique and modern Singaporean Chinese culture.

The main highlight of the event is the
“On-the-Spot Art Competition.”
We warmly welcome young and aspiring children from all over the country to create stunning artworks at
KINEX Shopping Mall
. Participants will have a limited amount of time to complete their artwork on-site, testing both their artistic skills and their ability to perform under pressure.
活动的主要亮点是“即兴绘画比赛”，我们热烈欢迎全国范围内的年轻有抱负的孩子们在KINEX SHOPPING MALL创作出令人惊艳的艺术作品。参赛者将有限的时间在现场创作他们的艺术作品，测试他们的艺术能力和在压力下的绘画能力。

This competition provides a platform for young artists to showcase their creativity and artistic talent while promoting the exploration and preservation of Singapore’s culture. Within a limited time, participants used their painting skills and imagination to create stunning artworks.
More than just a competition, it is an opportunity for the younger generation to express their understanding and love for Singapore’s culture through art. It represents not only a personal artistic achievement but also a chance for everyone to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of Singapore’s rich cultural heritage.

Competition Rules
- Open to: all participants residing in Singapore
- Age groups: 7-12 years old, 13-18 years old
- Theme: CultuRediscover - Singapore Culture
- Artwork requirement: A3 paper will be provided to each participant
- Art medium: participants should bring their own art materials (watercolour, acrylic, gouache, crayon, oil pastel, soft pastel, coloured pencil, pencil, or pen may be used)
- Venue: KINEX Shopping Mall - Level 1 Atrium (11 Tanjong Katong Road, Singapore 437157)
- Competition time: 18 June 2023, 1pm-4pm
- Prize presentation: 18 June 2023, 5:30pm

Prizes
All participants will receive a certificate and a goodie bag worth $89. In each age group, judges will select 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze award winners on the spot, along with several Merit awards. Trophies, certificates and prizes worth $99-$300 will be presented on the spot, and winning artworks will also be exhibited at KINEX Shopping Mall.

Mr Kow Fong (Ah Guo)
Ah Guo, whose real name is Lee Kow Fong, is a Singapore picture-book author, illustrator, polytechnic lecturer, Lianhe Zaobao columnist, and self-described "impractical dreamer."
Mr Yip Yew Chong
A well-known Singapore mural artist. His murals are full of nostalgic warmth and everyday life, recreating scenes from Singapore's past. The life-sized figures and settings invite visitors to interact with them, and the careful attention to detail makes photos taken with the murals feel as though the viewer has stepped back into that earlier time.
