Bibi Lei

Born in 1985 in Macau, Bibi Lei is a Chinese-Portuguese artist currently based in Tokyo, Japan. Having grown up immersed in both Eastern and Western cultures, she is a self-taught artist who has developed a unique, childlike artistic style.

Bibi Lei’s works are characterized by playful brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and whimsical compositions that reflect boundless imagination and a longing for the unknown. Her artistic style is deeply influenced by her childhood experiences living with her grandmother in Lisbon, Portugal.

Bibi Lei

At the age of five, Bibi moved to Lisbon, where she was cared for by her grandmother—a traditional tile and pottery painter. Watching her grandmother paint intricate designs on ceramic tiles became Bibi’s first introduction to art. She was mesmerized by the colorful patterns and would play with ceramic paints using her tiny hands, quickly falling in love with painting.

Recognizing her talent, her grandmother allowed Bibi to paint freely on the walls. She took Bibi to art museums, where she observed the masterpieces of Matisse, Van Gogh, and Monet—experiences that became some of her most cherished childhood memories.

Bibi later pursued design in university and worked in the design industry after graduation. However, she always felt that something was missing in her life.

In 2017, when Bibi’s daughter was born, her passion for painting was reignited—she felt as if she had been reborn. As her daughter grew, Bibi found herself once again painting with her fingers, just as she had done with her grandmother at the age of five.

For Bibi, emotion and color are the most essential elements of her art. Inspired by her daughter, she paints using either a brush or her bare hands, creating a vibrant world filled with positive energy and wonder through her unique color combinations and textured layers.

Her artistic universe is a kaleidoscope of colors, infused with fantasy, childhood innocence, love, hope, and joy. Her paintings feel like an enchanting wonderland—one that instantly brings a smile to anyone who gazes upon them.

A recurring motif in her work is a pink-haired girl, a signature character who embodies the essence of a superhero—boldly venturing into a world of fantasy and the unknown, created by Bibi’s imagination. Another striking figure is the rainbow-crowned girl, who seems to have stepped out of a fairytale. Dressed in a flowing floral gown, she dances with the wind beneath a radiant sun, surrounded by whimsical, multicolored ornaments that add a touch of dreamlike magic to her paintings.

In 2021, Bibi held her first solo exhibition, “My Colorful World,” in Tokyo, marking the first time her talent was recognized by Japanese galleries. That same year, she collaborated with Caran d’Ache Ginza to host another solo exhibition, “Is the World Still Bibi?” where she introduced a character resembling a combination of herself and her daughter.

Since 2022, her works have been exhibited in cities including New York, Tokyo, Osaka, Busan, Shanghai, Beijing, and Brussels. Her exhibition “My Brave Playtime” was completely sold out, drawing increased attention from Japanese private collectors. As a result, she has emerged as one of Japan’s most sought-after rising artists, gaining admiration from galleries and private collectors worldwide.
