Porsche 992

Daniel Arsham’s “Ash & Pyrite Eroded Porsche” transforms the Porsche 992 into a driveable sculpture, elevating its texture to extraordinary levels. Arsham’s fascination with erosion manifests in the ash-white exterior reminiscent of a cement wall. The damaged designs embedded within the hood, sides, and rear of the car evoke a post-apocalyptic ambiance, with the vehicle standing as a testament to history’s endurance.

Daniel Arsham’s passion for automobiles and fascination with erosion come together in his alluring, yet apocalyptic, creations. His recent showcase, “Turning Keys,” in Detroit’s Library Street Collective, is fueled by this compelling combination.

Arsham’s detailed 1:3 scale replicas of supercars and other automotive artifacts serve as a tribute to Detroit’s automotive industry and global car culture. In addition, his work also pays homage to the film industry, recognizing the symbolic role that characters’ vehicle choices often play in reflecting their personalities.

Within the gallery’s elongated glass room, an eroded, wave-like wall installation resembles a series of dominoes, each wall decaying from the center at varying degrees of destruction. Viewers can gaze through the layers of transformation to discern a human-like wall in the distance, inviting an immersive experience.

Daniel Arsham, born in 1980 in Cleveland and currently based in New York, grounds his aesthetic in the concept of “fictional archaeology.” By combining mediums such as sculpture, drawing, architecture, and film, Arsham’s “future archaeology” creations generate a critical context. These unforgettable and witty scenes blend romanticism and Pop Art qualities.

As early as 2005, Hedi Slimane invited Arsham to design the fitting rooms for Dior’s menswear collection in Los Angeles. Today, Dior’s Artistic Director for menswear, Kim Jones, invited Arsham to design the show space for Dior’s 2020 Summer menswear collection. The space features a massive Dior logo statue.

RIMOWA also collaborated with Arsham on a limited-edition series of luggage. Drawing inspiration from RIMOWA’s signature camera bag, Arsham created the “Eroded Suitcase,” showcased alongside the RIMOWA Classic Attaché contemporary luggage line. The Attaché series balances a vintage aesthetic with minimalist design, highlighting RIMOWA’s signature grooved aluminum.

Daniel Arsham’s works often transport objects into a seemingly post-millennial temporal context, creating a time-warped illusion. His fascination with the concept of time collapse is evident, as his works appear to be both relics of the past and fragments from a possible future. Everyday objects, reimagined within futuristic concepts, highlight this temporal ambiguity.Materials like volcanic ash, quartz, obsidian, pyrite, glacial rock crystal, steel, and plaster embody time’s passage in Arsham’s works.

Architecture plays a crucial role in his oeuvre, with eroded walls, dead-end staircases, and knotty surfaces challenging our spatial and formal perceptions.

Arsham’s sculptural works often feature decay or disintegration, allowing viewers to empathize with the pain of his characters or animals. In 2019, his artwork titled “Quartz Eroded Vogue Magazine 101” sold for HKD 2.3 million (approximately $231,000 USD) at a Phillips’ 20th Century & Contemporary Art auction, setting a new record for the artist’s work at auction.
