What is Installation Art?
Installation Art is named after the English word Install, which means “to install.”
It can be simply understood as the composition of this art, which first has an object, becoming the content and medium of the “installation.” After that, it consists of the actions of people.
The core of installation art lies in the participation and experience of people with the work. It must be a collective act, and if there is no participation and interaction from the audience, the entire meaning and content of the work will not be established. Because the actions of the audience are not predetermined, the uncertainty in the interactive process will also have an impact on the work.
Therefore, installation artworks are bidirectional and mutually influential. The audience no longer stands passively in front of the artwork.
Installation Art has endless possibilities for creation.
The creation of works is multi-dimensional, multi-form, and diverse.
Space: Installation art spaces are not limited and can be in traditional exhibition spaces like galleries and museums, but also in places like hospitals, squares, beaches, deserts, forests, islands, airports, and even the sky.
One form of installation art creation is called “site-specific art,” where the artwork can only exist in the space where it was created.

Media: “Objects” are one component of installation art. Generally, various materials are mixed, including everyday objects we are familiar with and unique objects created by artists to fit the theme.

《Floor 1997-2000》
Do Ho Suh
Thousands of small figures made of plastic are placed under a movable glass plate, lifting their hands under the transparent glass plate to support the weight of the heavy glass floor together. Audiences can walk on the glass plate freely. The figures symbolize the countless ordinary people who work hard regardless of their status in life.

《Cement Eclipses》
Isaac Cordal
The project’s name represents the unconscious oppression of capitalism and bureaucracy on others in social norms. The artist’s sculptural figures engage in small-scale art intervention in urban discourse through the re-use of forgotten public spaces.
Each cement sculpture has a heavy and elusive posture, but upon closer inspection, each figure seems indifferent to the situation they are in.

《Minimum Monument》
Nele Azevedo
The human-shaped ice sculptures are placed on the steps of the Guard Hall at the Berlin Constitution Square and silently melt away within 30 minutes in the sweltering heat. The artist’s choice to preserve the openness of the artwork gives it a double meaning.
Firstly, it symbolizes fallen war heroes, urging us to witness and reflect on the names on the memorial, acknowledging their once real presence in history.
Secondly, it serves as a warning about the threat of global warming. As humans continue to greedily exploit natural resources, our existence is also at risk of disappearing.

《Measuring the Universe》
Roman Ondak
The artwork is set in a completely white room, where each visitor will be guided by a gallery staff member to use black markers to write their name, height, and date of visit on the wall. Visitors can freely choose their marker location.
This artwork is conceptualized by the artist and co-created by the audience. The art creation method blurs the distinction between “artist” and “ordinary person.” It’s a perfect example demonstrating the core values of installation art: audience participation and interaction.
That’s all for today’s sharing 🙂 See you next time!
