In the art world, there is a remarkable painter who didn’t truly begin her artistic career until retiring at the age of 69, yet she conquered the art world with her vibrant colors and unique perspective.

She is Alma Woodsey Thomas, an African-American artist and the first Black woman to hold a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her works were collected by President Obama for the White House, and NASA even used her artistic style to inspire rocket designs.

Alma was born in 1891 in Columbus, Georgia, a segregated town in the American South. Growing up, she faced two starkly contrasting realities: at home, her parents encouraged her to read classic literature, study languages, and pursue artistic knowledge; in public, however, the racist white-dominated culture treated her as inferior. This confusing duality led Alma to seek moments of peace and harmony in nature from an early age.

In 1907, seeking to escape the racial violence of the South, Alma and her family relocated to Washington, D.C. Despite segregation policies, the nation’s capital offered more opportunities for African Americans compared to other cities at the time.

Alma dreamed of becoming an architect, but female architects were extremely rare in that era. Instead, she enrolled at Howard University and, in 1924, became the university’s first graduate in the Fine Arts program. That same year, Alma began a 35-year career teaching art at a junior high school in Washington. She devoted herself fully to education, organizing art clubs, lectures, and exhibitions for her students, which allowed her to support herself while pursuing her own art part-time.

Alma’s career as a full-time artist began relatively late; she only devoted herself entirely to painting after her retirement in 1960. Her artistic style has been likened to Byzantine mosaics and Georges Seurat’s pointillism. She employed bright color blocks and repeated patterns to create visual effects that are both orderly and vibrant.

She had a unique perspective on color: “Color is life, and light is the mother of color.” In her paintings, there are no dark tones—only a celebration of light. What we witness is not just an artist’s pursuit of beauty, but also a person’s profound love for life.

Alma’s works are held in the collections of many major art institutions, with the Smithsonian American Art Museum possessing the largest public collection. Through her iconic colorful pieces, the museum showcases the evolution of her work from 1959 to 1978. In recent years, as attention to multicultural art has grown, Thomas’s work has gained increasing recognition, with The New York Times even featuring a monograph on her in its 2016 Holiday Gift Guide.

On February 24, 1978, Alma passed away in Washington, D.C., ending a life full of color and creativity. Yet her artistic legacy continues to shine brightly, just like the vibrant hues in her paintings.

Alma’s life teaches us that art is a universal language that transcends age, race, and time; color is a powerful tool for expressing one’s inner world; and perseverance and passion will eventually be rewarded. When we admire her vibrant works, we see not only beautiful combinations of color but also the profound love for life and the pursuit of beauty that defined her as an artist.

For children, Alma is not only an artist worth knowing but also a life mentor. Many believe that one must start art in childhood, yet Alma showed us that she discovered her unique artistic style only after retirement. Life has no set timetable, and creativity knows no age limit. As long as one maintains curiosity and love for the world in their heart, anyone can shine with their own unique brilliance at any stage of life.

Her story encourages every child who loves art: no matter the challenges, always pursue beauty; no matter your age, you can express yourself through art; no matter where you come from, you can create your own world with color.

Perhaps, by planting this seed of color in a child’s heart today, it will bloom into an unexpected flower at some stage of their life.
