Yuko Kurihara, a Japanese artist born in 1976, was shaped during her youth by diverse regions and cultures. She attended elementary school in Singapore, junior high school in Chiba, Japan, high school in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and in 1994, she enrolled in the University of Tsukuba to study Japanese painting, focusing mainly on drawing flora and fauna.

Her artistic journey across multiple countries infused her work with rich cultural elements. Since her graduation with a master’s degree in 2000, Yuko Kurihara has devoted herself to creating Nihonga (Japanese-style paintings) and is regarded as one of the most outstanding female Nihonga artists in Japan today.

Her paintings each have lovely names: watermelons are called “laughing red balls,” flowers are “the exquisite parrot,” spruce trees from Karay, “the first semester,” “a flying boat,” “cushion-shaped board chestnut,” “pulp-fruit strata,” “Imperial Crown Lychee,” and roses are simply called “roses.”

As Yuko Kurihara herself has said, “I seem to have a greater appreciation for vivid colors and interesting color schemes in everyday life than most. I want to paint subjects that particularly interest me, and so the natural hues of these themes are the most crucial element in my works. I aim to convey the charm of these colors through my art.”
