“Flowers That Bloom at Midnight” is a series of large-scale sculptures, each adorned with vibrant color combinations. Throughout her career, flowers have been an essential component of Yayoi Kusama’s works, serving as metaphors to reflect her fascination with various concepts and her disdain for dichotomies. Her work may have also been influenced by the Pop Art movement, a prominent cultural phenomenon based on consumerism and popular culture iconography that originated in the late 1950s and early 1960s in the UK and the US.

Each flower stands between 4 and 6 feet tall and is cast from plastic and metal with a glass-fiber coating. They are hand-painted with huge opaque shades and decorated with her classic polka dots, which she calls “Infinity Nets.” The dots can also be seen as a source of energy for her creation, which she confirmed in her statement:
