On October 20th, 2019, from 9 am to 12 pm, TREEART’s team of teachers led some of our young artists in a large outdoor sketching event at Chijmes in Singapore. The event included 50 young artists and their parents, led by our Course Director, Tiger, who had just returned from a study tour in Europe.
Event Preparation
A week prior to the event, the entire TREEART teaching team visited the sketching location for a “site survey” and designed sketching courses with varying content based on the same theme for children of different age groups.
At TREEART, we believe that sketching is not an activity that only children who have undergone professional training and possess high skill levels can participate in. Instead, we believe that anyone who loves art, life, and can appreciate the beauty in everyday life can pick up a brush, step out of their homes and create.
Of course, the significance and focus of sketching differ for children of different ages. Younger children may produce less accurate sketches, but their natural curiosity allows them to capture unique beauty that adults may not easily perceive. Therefore, our teachers guide them in observing and experiencing the scenery, before using creative materials and tools prepared in advance to complete their sketches or recreate the scene.
Event Highlights
At 9 am, parents and children gathered at the entrance of the Chijmes Cathedral, where they received their sketching T-shirts. Tiger led the participants on a tour of the cathedral’s interior and exterior, sharing the history of Chijmes and giving a detailed explanation of Gothic architecture and its artistic characteristics.
After the tour, children were divided into groups based on their age for sketching sessions led by TREEART teachers. To ensure that each age group could complete their artwork under the guidance of professional teachers, TREEART maintained a teacher-student ratio of no more than 1:6.
In addition to sketching, we also gained knowledge about history and architecture.
Even amid the hustle and bustle of the outdoors, the children paid close attention to the TREEART teachers’ instructions, demonstrating their passion for painting. At TREEART, our goal is for each of our young artists to genuinely appreciate art and live their lives with an artistic mindset.
As the event drew to a close, the children completed their artworks one after another. Finally, TREEART’s teachers gathered the children for a group photo in front of Chijmes, marking the successful conclusion of the sketching event.
Sketching Scene
Despite the strong sun, the children’s enthusiasm for creation remained high. Although sketching outdoors may not provide the ideal conditions of an art studio, being immersed in nature can inspire and ignite greater passion in children. When each creator becomes fully engrossed in their work, the outside world fades away, leaving only themselves, their tools, and the scene before them.
After the sketching event, many TREEART young artists proudly showcased their creations. Seeing the children’s genuine smiles, we believe they have gained a great deal from this experience.
