This series of art history documentaries produced by BBC explores thousands of years of human civilization’s development through artworks, covering six continents, 31 countries, and over 500 works of art. Over two years of planning ensured a comprehensive presentation of societal landscapes. Each one-hour episode explores the “origins of human creativity,” “ways of seeing art,” and the “progress of global civilizations” through an artistic lens.

Spanning the Ming and Qing dynasties of Chinese history, the Forbidden City, built 600 years ago, houses numerous ancient art treasures. According to statistics, it has a total of 1,052,653 pieces, accounting for one-sixth of China’s total relics, making it a world-renowned ancient cultural and art museum. Among these, many relics are irreplaceable national treasures, like the “Qingming Shanghe Tu,” Yunwen Pan, and Qingyu Cloud Dragon Pattern Stove. These precious treasures have experienced wear and tear throughout the tumultuous centuries, even under maximum protection.
Since the establishment of the Palace Museum, generations of relic restorers, adhering to the master-apprentice system, have walked through the red walls of the Forbidden City. They take loneliness as a norm in their lives, and are willing to spend decades giving new life to relics with their magical hands and top-notch restoration skills.
