In recent years, discussions in the art world have frequently intertwined with technological advancements. From the rise of blockchain-based NFTs to the explosion of the “metaverse” concept in 2022, and the rapid popularity of ChatGPT—AI technology has been evolving at an astonishing pace. Within just a few months, it has begun replacing human efforts in writing academic papers, film scripts, translation tasks, strategic planning, and even venturing into the realm of artistic creation.

At the beginning of last year, OpenAI, the team behind ChatGPT, launched Sora, a groundbreaking AI-powered text-to-video generation tool. Its debut sent shockwaves across global social media and various industries, once again demonstrating the immense capabilities of artificial intelligence.

Compared to previous AI video production tools, Sora offers significantly more advanced features. It can generate coherent, high-quality videos directly from textual descriptions, maintaining exceptional continuity in visual storytelling.

One content creator leveraged Sora to produce the animated short film The Birth of the Monkey King based solely on Journey to the West. Remarkably, what traditionally required a large team and at least a year of production was accomplished in just a week by a single individual. Viewers were astounded, exclaiming that the long-imagined future where “one person can make a movie” had finally become a reality.

The launch of Sora has sparked deep reflection in the education sector—In the age of AI, do we still need to “bury our heads in books”? Will many jobs, especially in the arts, eventually be replaced by AI?

As this era undergoes monumental transformation, parents are feeling its impact firsthand. Their biggest concern is: How can we best prepare our children for the future? What essential skills must they develop to confidently navigate the challenges ahead?

01 What Challenges Do Children Face in the AI Era?

According to a study by the University of Oxford, approximately 47% of jobs in today’s society could be replaced by AI within the next 10 to 20 years. Indeed, as we witness the rapid advancements of artificial intelligence, many routine physical and cognitive tasks are increasingly at risk of being automated.

AI has already permeated nearly every aspect of our lives. We have seen the emergence of AI doctors, AI chess masters, AI directors, and AI editors. Even in the realms of art—where creativity and imagination are paramount—the influence of AI is becoming increasingly evident.

On October 25, 2018, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy, an AI-generated artwork created using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), was sold at a Christie’s auction for $432,500. This marked the first AI-generated portrait ever auctioned at a major art house.

In August 2022, a piece titled Théâtre D’opéra Spatial won the top prize in the art competition at the Colorado State Fair in the U.S. The artwork was created by artist Jason Allen using the AI-powered tool Midjourney.

While AI-generated art has sparked debates within the art world—raising questions about originality and artistic value—it has undoubtedly opened new frontiers in artistic creation.

In 2001, educational theorist Marc Prensky introduced the term “digital natives” in his book Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants to describe the younger generation that has grown up immersed in the internet era. What may seem mysterious and uncertain to us today may simply be an everyday reality for children in the future.

Throughout history, every technological revolution has posed a challenge to traditional art while simultaneously driving artistic progress. In the 19th century, the invention of photography initially appeared to threaten the existence of painting, as many believed the need for realistic representation would vanish.

However, history has proven otherwise. Rather than fading away, painting was liberated from the constraints of realism, ushering in an era of modern art and creative expression. To this day, painting remains a thriving and ever-evolving art form, producing remarkable works across generations.

Instead of lamenting the obsolescence of traditional professions due to AI, the more critical question is: How can we embrace this challenge? As parents and educators, we must adopt a forward-thinking approach to child development, equipping the next generation with the essential skills and qualities needed to thrive in this new era.

02 Art is a Must-Learn Subject for Children in the AI Era

With the advent of the AI era, the value of this statement continues to rise.

If AI can eventually permeate every aspect of human life, then art will undoubtedly be the last frontier to be fully replaced by artificial intelligence. While AI has made remarkable progress in the field of art, human imagination and creativity remain irreplaceable.

Art is not merely a display of techniques and forms—it is a vessel for emotions, thoughts, and culture. These intrinsic qualities are difficult for algorithms to replicate or replace, making art an exclusively human domain where AI can only serve as an auxiliary tool.

In the age of artificial intelligence, aesthetic education is more essential than ever before. Some parents may question whether art education is still necessary, given that AI-powered tools can now assist with creative tasks. While most art programs for children focus on drawing, art education is far more than just learning to draw. In the AI era, children may not need to master traditional painting techniques, but they absolutely need to develop a fundamental sense of aesthetics.

As technology advances at an unprecedented pace, the traditional boundaries between disciplines are becoming increasingly blurred. Conventional education, with its rigid specialization, often limits students to a single field of knowledge. In contrast, the AI era demands multidisciplinary thinkers who can adapt to complex, dynamic challenges.

In the age of artificial intelligence, art education must evolve, focusing on fostering:

  • Creative Thinking – Encouraging children to push boundaries and think innovatively.
  • Aesthetic Sensibility – Developing an appreciation for beauty, form, and design.
  • Interdisciplinary Knowledge – Blending art with science, technology, and humanities.
  • AI-Aided Creativity – Harnessing AI tools to expand artistic expression.
